EC direct debiting
To process a payment made with an EC debit card, there are currently four available options. Both PIN-based procedures include a guarantee by the card issuing bank via an online or offline payment authorisation.
Neither signature-based procedure provides a redemption guarantee by the card issuing bank. With EC direct debiting, ‘normal’ direct debit data are generated, which may be returned by the card issuing bank when the account does not contain sufficient funds.
The German magazine ‘POS Manager’ published an article in 2006 explaining the differences between the procedures. The author is Nicolas Adolph from InterCard. You can download the German article here.
